When 14-month-old Nick Clarke began calling his mom Kerry instead of Mom, she was amused. But her family told the Prescott Valley, AZ, mother that her son was being disrespectful. They were overreacting. While it might be sassy for an older kid to use your first name, your toddler is just mimicking the adults around him, who probably don't call you Mom, says Susan Fox, author ofRookie Dad Tackles the Toddlers. In fact, it's a sign of his cognitive development: He's learning that one thing can have several labels—that Mommy is also a wife, a woman or Kerry.

By age 2 or so, your toddler will get that people fit into many categories, and you'll likely be Mom again.
