Q&A with Kerri Walsh-Jennings

Q&A with Kerri Walsh-Jennings

At this year's London Olympics, Kerri Walsh-Jennings proved to be not only a world champion, but one tough mama. The volleyball superstar, and supermom, played her way to her third Olympic gold while unknowingly pregnant with her third child. She took some time out to talk to us about her pregnancy, workout routine, and how she balances it all.

Did you have any signs or symptoms of pregnancy during the games?
I had allergies, and every time I sneezed it felt like my abs were being torn apart. The only other time I felt that sensation was when I was pregnant with my boys. And I was unreasonably moody.

Would you have gone through with the games if you'd known that you were pregnant?
Of course! Casey and I were trying. We wouldn't have tried if I was worried about playing while pregnant. Plus it was really early on in the pregnancy so I knew that the baby was safe.

Are your boys involved in your workout routine?
Absolutely! Casey and I take them to the gym with us and we hand the baby off to each other while we take turns doing our squats. We're a very physical and active family together. We like to spend a lot of time at the beach and parks.

What is your biggest struggle as a parent?
Patience. Sleep deprivation usually leads to a lack of patience, but I have two really good boys. Casey and I are a good team. All parenting challenges are to be expected, but they can also be fun.

How do you balance career and motherhood?
Time management and a lot of preparation. My family always comes first. I always want to make sure that they're comfortable with the plans that I make. I also lean on my husband a lot, and we have a great circle of people around us who we love and trust.

What is the best parenting advice you've ever received?
Hmmm. I haven't really gotten much. People are slacking! One thing that I remember being told is that you can never love your kids too much. Love 'em up! When they push you away, hug them even more.

What are you looking forward to next?
My oldest is almost out of his easy ups already, so I can't wait to get our new baby into Pampers Swaddlers.
