Meet the 'Dad Bod' Ken Doll and His More Realistic Friends
The Short of It
By now you've probably heard that Barbie got a full-body makeover to make her look more like everyday women. Well now, meet the new and improved Barbie's match: Dad Bod Ken!
The Lowdown
Following the reinvention of Barbie, which included her curvy, petite, and tall iterations, social media began to demand the hunky, equally unrealistic, original Ken get an overhaul too. So a U.K.-based e-commerce website called Lyst decided to do just that by introducing the modern day, "Fashionisto" Kens, in Beach DadBod, Bearded Hipster (featuring a tattoo of Barbie!), Balding, African American, Asian and petite versions.
"Real men don't all look like Ken, just as real women don't all look like Barbie—so it's about time the doll was more reflective and a bit more body positive," Katherine Ormerod, editorial director at Lyst, explained to Today Style. "Taking the new Barbie lineup as a starting point, we tried to mirror some of her changes, while adding in some distinctly male realities. Not all men have a six-pack, thus the 'dad bod' belly. Equally, not all men can boast a full head of hair, so we wanted to show that with the balding hairstyle."
These Kens aren't actually available for sale, though, but you can buy some men's fashions the dolls sport from the site.
The Upshot
I think these dolls are hilarious! I'd love to buy a Beach DadBod Ken for my daughters. No offense to my husband! I can't wait to see this idea come to fruition.
